School on the Floating Islands
We had an unexpected visit to a school
house in Puno. It was literally its own little floating island.
We did not expect to go there so we did not take any supplies
that were much needed. Each student had one little note book,
pencil and that was about it. No teacher supplies or anything
extra for the kids. They did have a really nice computer for the
student that was donated, but without electricity on the island
it was still in a box.
One highlight was students signing songs in English to
practice their English.
We left a donation but we were really bummed that we didn’t
take any supplies.
School in Anapia
One of our primary plans going to Peru was to spend some time teaching
English in Anapia.
Unfortunately, this did not turn out as expected.
We did get to spend time with the children and got to deliver
all our school supplies, but not as much time as we would have
liked. None of these
kids had ever seen an eraser for the end of a pencil.
When we passed them out we had to put them on the end of the
pencil for them. But the highlight was the soccer ball.
There were no balls on the island that had enough air to even
bounce. So a brand new
Wilson
ball right out of the box was more then some of these kids could
even withstand. They were pacing up and down waiting for their
teacher to take it out of the box for them to play with. One last
minute buy before we left the States was for an air pump for the
ball. We were so happy to have taken it because it was really needed
for all the children.
